Whether we are aware of it or not, when we are focused on and concerned with meeting our own apparent personal needs, we are choosing to live in our own private world of sin and guilt. This world, based on a non-existent past, is filled only with projected symbols of lack and fear and attack, sometimes disguised in pleasant forms so that we do not recognize its hopelessness. And so we do not see our brother as he is, but rather as a separate body who should serve only to fulfill our separate interests, based on our own personal needs. With this perception of our brother, communication becomes impossible as we each seem to move in our own private world, with our own private thoughts. Because “projection makes perception” (T-13.V.3:5; T-21.in.1:1), there is no way out of our private hell until we are willing to ask for help from a different Teacher, Who will lead us to a different perception of ourselves, the world and our brother, based on our one need, forgiveness, which is the only real need we share with all our brothers. From this recognition of shared interests, we have begun our journey with our Teacher from private worlds to the real world.
