A common observation of students as they continue their study and practice of A Course in Miracles is that—much to their surprise—their fear level has increased and peace has become more elusive. Yet it is not surprising that the decision to restore the previously rejected awareness of our true Identity as one with God would produce considerable discomfort. This is because we could begin to recognize some of the defenses we use to keep the truth concealed. The resulting fear and discomfort are addressed by Jesus in the Course and are among the topics discussed in this class. Included as well are Jesus’ comforting reassurances that he is with us in our process of withdrawing the promise we made to the ego never to allow union to call us out of separation and therefore we would look at what we swore we would never look at (T-19.IV-D.3:4; 6:1). Thus we learn that our fear is not justified. We have not lost our innocence, as Jesus reminds us, and so we recognize at last that in truth “there is nothing to fear” (W-pI.48). The peace that is our inheritance is now restored to our awareness.
