Jesus tells us in his course that we do not know how to celebrate his birth (T-15.X.1:5-6). The elaborate nature of the annual Christmas observances seems to demonstrate otherwise. But as we grow to appreciate Jesus’ perspective from outside the dream—“The gift of union is the only gift that I was born to give” (T-15.X.3:4)—we realize that his perspective has little in common with the world’s perspective from within the dream. For the world’s view is based upon the dualism of separation, which inevitably leads to sacrifice, exemplified in the often mandatory and compulsory gift-giving typical of the Christmas season. Yet through the gentle guidance of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, Who help us expose the ego-driven motivation in our rituals and traditions, we learn how to shift from our ego-supportive purpose to one that reflects Jesus’ gift of union in all our relationships.
