The ego is the great peddler of false hopes and promises, trying to convince us that it has a remedy for everything that ails us, with its seemingly unlimited substitutes for love. But as the years pass by and we begin to realize that nothing in this world really works, that ultimately our bodies are going to fail us, and that the peace and happiness we have been so desperately seeking continue to elude us, it is not uncommon to sink into a deep morass of hopelessness and despair, which at best we cover over with distractions and denial.
And yet we have been offered an Alternative that promises a very different outcome: a genuine and lasting experience of peace and love’s reflection. However, we must first be willing to let go of our foolishly stubborn insistence that we still know how and where to find what we are looking for. As Jesus exhorts us, “Resign now as your own teacher. This resignation will not lead to depression” (T-12.V.8:2-3). With that humility and willingness, it is now possible for us to learn from the Teacher Whose “curriculum is never depressing, because it is a curriculum of joy” (T-8.VII.8:5), for He directs us to the only place of hope, where meaningful change can happen: the decision-making mind, whose faulty choice for the ego has been the only “cause” for hopelessness and despair.
