The old proverb, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions” takes on new meaning from the perspective of A Course in Miracles. In the Course, Jesus says, “Trust not your good intentions. They are not enough” (T-18.IV.2:1-2). Our good intentions, coming from a failure to recognize and understand the illusory nature of the separation and the world that follows from it, unfortunately then serve only to reinforce our belief in our inherent sinfulness and guilt, as we believe there is something we need to atone for. And that belief is the road to the ego’s hell, despite all our best intentions. Jesus exhorts us, rather than trusting our own good intentions, to “trust implicitly your willingness, whatever else may enter” (T-18.IV.2:3). The road to Heaven calls for the humility to recognize that we really do not understand anything and to accept that all the Holy Spirit is asking of us is the little willingness to trust that He knows and we do not, nor do we need to. In Jesus’ words, “It is your realization that you need do so little that enables Him to give so much” (T-18.IV.1:10). This class will explore this theme through readings and discussion.
